Margaret Calvert revolutionised signage in the UK, improving clarity and safety with iconic and humanised designs, impacting everyday life.

About the Short

1950s-1960s: Margaret Calvert, born in South Africa and based in the United Kingdom, together with Jock Kinneir, transformed British road and rail signage. His work focused on clarity, simplicity and universality, making them more accessible to the public.

Transport and Rail Alphabet typefaces: In the 1960s, they designed the Transport typeface, revolutionizing road signs for its legibility at high speeds and long distances. Simultaneously, they created Rail Alphabet for British Railways, unifying communication within train stations with a coherent and efficient design.

Humanized Design and Experiences: Calvert customized the "Crossing Kids" sign by taking inspiration from his own childhood, resulting in a friendlier and more memorable sign. This approach to integrating human elements into design reflects how good design can positively influence people's daily lives and safety.

Collaboration with Disney: In an effort to make traffic safety more accessible to children, Calvert collaborated with Disney on the redesign of traffic signs, a curious fact that highlights the versatility and impact of his work.
